The voltage divider formula calculates how the input voltage is divided between two resistors in series. The output voltage is proportional to the ratio of R₂ to the total resistance (R₁ + R₂).

About Voltage Dividers

A voltage divider is a simple circuit that uses two resistors in series to reduce a voltage to a fraction of its value. It's one of the most common and useful circuits in electronics.

Common applications:

  • Level shifting for sensors and analog inputs
  • Reference voltage generation
  • Biasing transistors and other active components
  • Volume controls and potentiometers
  • Measuring unknown resistances (with a known voltage)

Note: This calculator assumes an ideal voltage divider with no load on the output. In real circuits, the load resistance will affect the output voltage if it's comparable to or less than R₂.
